Bolivia's first copper coinage was authorized in 1864, and the 2 Centésimos was among the inaugural issues struck for general circulation. The misspelling — CENTECIMOS in place of CENTÉSIMOS — appears on a portion of the 1864 production and is attributed to an engraver error at the Potosí mint, where die preparation for the new decimal copper series was being executed under some urgency as the country transitioned away from its colonial-era monetary structure. The error was corrected in subsequent production, making the misspelled variety a recognized and catalogued piece rather than an afterthought.
