The boldly cast raised characters are contained within a plain inner rim, with the broad flat field and outer rim typical of Yuan dynasty cash coinage. The style reflects the unique Mongol imperial decree to employ the 'Phags-pa script, devised by the Tibetan monk Drogön Chögyal Phagpa at the command of Kublai Khan, as an official writing system for the empire. |
