The 'Phags-pa script on this issue was commissioned by Kublai Khan directly from the Tibetan monk Drogön Chögyal Phagpa, who devised the alphabet at imperial order in 1269 to provide the Mongol Yuan dynasty with a unified writing system capable of transcribing all languages under its rule. Its appearance on circulating coinage was deliberate policy — an assertion of Yuan administrative reach across a multilingual empire stretching from Korea to Persia. The experiment was largely abandoned after Kublai's death in 1294, which tightly brackets the production window for this type.
