| Obverse description | Four characters in 'Phags-pa script occupy the four quadrants surrounding the central square hole, arranged to be read vertically from top to bottom and left to right. The inscription reads ꡆꡦ ꡝꡦꡦꡋ ꡉꡟꡃ ꡎꡓ, transliterating the Chinese Zhiyuan Tongbao — meaning 'Universal Currency of the Zhiyuan era.' The boldly cast raised characters are contained within a plain inner rim, with the broad flat field and outer rim typical of Yuan dynasty cash coinage. The style reflects the unique Mongol imperial decree to employ the 'Phags-pa script, devised by the Tibetan monk Drogön Chögyal Phagpa at the command of Kublai Khan, as an official writing system for the empire. |
