| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim, with four Chinese characters in Seal script (zhuanshu) disposed in the four cardinal positions around the hole, reading top-bottom, right-left: 宣 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (bottom), 和 (left), forming the reign-title legend 宣和通寶 (Xuanhe Tongbao). The characters are rendered in the distinctive angular, architecturally formal style associated with Northern Song imperial Seal-script coinage, with bold, well-defined strokes rising from the flat field. The outer rim is plain and slightly raised. The entire surface exhibits the heavy iron oxidation and reddish-brown patination typical of Song dynasty iron cash. |
