| Descrizione del dritto | Central square hole surrounded by an inner rim, with four Chinese characters in clerical script (lishu) arranged in the four cardinal positions reading 聖宋元寶 (Shengsong Yuanbao). The characters are boldly cast in relief with the characteristic angular strokes of the clerical script style. An outer raised rim encircles the coin, and the flat field between the inner and outer rims is plain. The overall style is consistent with Northern Song dynasty iron cash production. |

Shengsong Yuanbao was cast during the Chongning reign of Emperor Huizong, a ruler better remembered as a painter and calligrapher than an administrator. The iron coinage of this period was not a first choice — it was a regional necessity, driven by chronic copper shortages in the northern and northwestern circuits where bronze cash consistently drained westward through trade or was hoarded. Iron filled the gap, though it was universally resented in commerce for its weight and rapid corrosion.
The crescent and dot marks on this variety are foundry control symbols, not decorative. Hartill 16.376 places this among the more specifically attributed Northern Song iron types, which is notable given how poorly most provincial iron cash from this reign survives with legible casting details intact.
