Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by an inner rim, with four Chinese characters in clerical script (lishu) arranged in the four cardinal positions reading 聖宋元寶 (Shengsong Yuanbao). The characters are boldly cast in relief with the characteristic angular strokes of the clerical script style. An outer raised rim encircles the coin, and the flat field between the inner and outer rims is plain. The overall style is consistent with Northern Song dynasty iron cash production.
