Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese ideograms in Regular script (Kaishu) disposed in the four cardinal positions around the central void, reading clockwise from the top: 紹 (Shao), 熙 (Xi), 元 (Yuan), 寶 (Bao). The characters are boldly cast in raised relief against a flat field, enclosed within a plain outer rim. The inscription 紹熙元寶 denotes the Shaoxi reign era of Emperor Guangzong of the Southern Song Dynasty (1190–1194) and translates as 'Original Currency of the Shaoxi Era.'
