The VOC established its mint at Negapatnam — on the Coromandel Coast of present-day Tamil Nadu — after seizing the port from the Portuguese in 1658. Cash coinage was essential for small transactions in the local economy, where indigenous copper issues had long dominated petty trade. The Dutch were essentially forcing their way into a denomination structure they hadn't invented and couldn't easily displace.
KM#16.2 is distinguished from the closely related 16.1 by die characteristics rather than any administrative change.
