Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by a plain inner rim, with four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform reading clockwise from the top: 洪 (top), 寶 (right), 通 (bottom), 武 (left), forming the reign-era legend 洪武通寶 (Hongwu Tongbao, meaning 'Hongwu Circulating Treasure'). The characters are rendered in standard script (kaishu) with bold, even strokes typical of early Ming imperial cast coinage. A raised rim borders the outer edge of the coin, and the flat fields show the characteristic granular surface texture of sand-cast bronze production.
