| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square inner rim. Four Chinese ideograms in Regular script (Kaishu) arranged symmetrically in the four cardinal positions around the central hole, reading clockwise from top: 大 (Da), 宋 (Song), 元 (Yuan), 寶 (Bao), together forming the reign title legend 'Da Song Yuan Bao' (Great Song Original Currency). The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat field, enclosed between the inner square rim and a plain outer rim. The overall design is typical of Southern Song dynasty cast cash coinage. |
