Chunxi Yuanbao iron cash were produced under Emperor Xiaozong of the Southern Song, a reign marked by a chronic shortage of copper that pushed the dynasty to expand iron coinage aggressively in certain circuits, particularly in Sichuan. Iron cash were legal tender within defined regional zones and could not be freely exchanged for copper equivalents at par — a monetary partition enforced by the state precisely because the metal differential made arbitrage otherwise irresistible.
The "Chun" mint signature on Hartill 17.178 places production at Qianchun, one of several furnace sites mobilized during this expansion. Iron coins from these years survive in widely varying condition owing to the metal's susceptibility to oxidation.
