L'Anse-Saint-Jean, a small municipality in the Saguenay region, declared itself a "kingdom" in 1997 as a tongue-in-cheek protest against Quebec municipal amalgamation policies that threatened to absorb smaller communities. The notes issued under the Royaume de L'Anse-Saint-Jean name are local scrip rather than legal tender — printed and circulated within the village as a combination of political statement and tourist novelty. The "2 Art" denomination references "Art" as the kingdom's invented currency unit, a deliberate pun on the French word for art and a nod to the community's cultural self-promotion.
