Straubing's municipal utilities issued this fractional gold-mark note during the brief stabilization window of late 1923, when the Rentenmark had not yet fully displaced the crisis-era improvisations that flooded southern Bavaria. Denominated in Goldmark rather than Papiermark, it was part of a deliberate municipal strategy to peg local scrip to a stable value unit while hyperinflation rendered conventional currency useless by the hour. Notgeld of this type was typically printed locally by small commercial presses with no particular technical sophistication, which is reflected in the workmanship.
The 2.10 Mark denomination is an oddity — fractional gold-mark values were rarely this precise, suggesting it was calculated against a specific utility tariff rather than issued as general-purpose exchange currency.
