The cross is rendered in the style of the Portuguese cruzado, reflecting Hamburg's adoption of that coinage standard. The surrounding Latin legend, divided by the cross arms, reads IN XPO CRVCIFIXO PENDIT SALVS NRA, a devotional inscription meaning 'In Christ crucified hangs our salvation.'
