Saba adopted the US dollar as its official currency in 2011 when the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved and the island became a special municipality of the Netherlands. These bimetallic pieces were issued by the island itself as local coinage distinct from standard Dutch Caribbean circulation, though the US dollar remained the functional transactional currency — leaving coins like this one with limited practical circulation from the outset.
