The joint coinage of Antiochos VIII Grypos and Cleopatra Thea was short-lived for reasons that had nothing to do with economics. Cleopatra Thea — not Cleopatra III, as the name field suggests — attempted to poison her son Grypos in 121 BC, whereupon he forced her to drink the cup herself. The joint issues belong to the narrow window before that rupture, struck while a deeply dysfunctional mother-son co-regency still held nominal form.
