Petelia, a Bruttian town of Oenotrian origin, earned an extraordinary place in the Second Punic War by holding out against Hannibal for longer than virtually any other Italian community — ancient sources record a siege lasting several months before starvation forced capitulation around 216 BC. Rome later honored the town's loyalty, and that status likely underwrote continued local bronze coinage into the first century BC, well past the point when most southern Italian mints had gone silent under Roman monetary consolidation.
