New Jersey's 1776 emission was authorized by the Provincial Congress in January of that year, one of the last acts of the colonial legislature before the full machinery of revolution took over. Isaac Collins, the official printer to the colony and a committed Quaker, produced the series from his Burlington shop — a curious biographical footnote given that his religious convictions would later make his continued support for the war effort complicated.
The nature print border — made from actual leaf impressions pressed directly into the printing plate — was a Ben Franklin-era anti-counterfeiting technique. Difficult to replicate with period engraving tools, it remained in use on American colonial paper long after Franklin first promoted it in the 1730s.
