Assorus was a small inland Sikel settlement in central Sicily, and its civic coinage represents one of the last gasps of autonomous municipal bronze production on the island before Augustus reorganized provincial administration and effectively ended local minting. By the late first century BC, most Sicilian towns had already ceased striking their own coins under Roman pressure; Assorus held on longer than most.

BMC Greek 2 places this among the earliest recognized specimens of the type.
