| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse displays the crowned royal shield of Scotland at centre, bearing the rampant lion within a double tressure flory-counter-flory, all surmounted by a large imperial crown with fleur-de-lis finials. The shield is rendered in high relief with fine decorative detail typical of late sixteenth-century Scottish hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, separated by pellet stops, reading IACOBVS · 6 · DEI · GRATIA · REX · SCOTORVM, identifying James VI as King of Scots by the Grace of God. The flan is characteristically irregular in shape, as expected of a hammered silver issue of this period. |
