The hair is elaborately dressed beneath a royal diadem, with a heavy veil drawn closely over the head and falling in deeply incised folds across the neck and shoulder. The facial features are idealized yet individualized, with a refined profile typical of Syracusan coinage of the late Hieronian period. The field is plain, with no inscription on the obverse. |

The horses are rendered in careful detail, stepping at a measured pace. A crescent symbol appears above the chariot group in the upper field, and the letter A (alpha) is placed to the right. The reverse legend BAΣIΛIΣΣAΣ ΦIΛIΣTIΔΟΣ, identifying the queen, is disposed in two lines around the field, identifying this coin as an issue struck in the name of Philistis, consort of Hieron II of Syracuse. |
