Somalia declared itself a republic on July 1, 1960, upon merging the former Trust Territory of Somalia (administered by Italy) with British Somaliland. The 1979 commemorative marks the tenth anniversary of the Supreme Revolutionary Council's 1969 coup, not the original founding — Siad Barre's government consistently reframed the revolutionary seizure of power as the true birth of the modern Somali state.
The Somali National Bank issued a series of gold commemoratives through the 1970s largely for export sale and foreign exchange generation rather than domestic circulation.
