Colombia hosted the 39th International Eucharistic Congress in Bogotá in August 1968 — the same visit that brought Pope Paul VI to South America for the first time, making it the first papal visit to the continent in history. The Congress drew an estimated one million pilgrims to Bogotá and was the organizing event behind a burst of Colombian commemorative coinage that year.
At 64.50 grams of .900 gold, this is among the heaviest coins the Casa de Moneda issued in the twentieth century. Struck in a limited commemorative run, examples rarely show handling wear but frequently exhibit bag marks consistent with bulk storage rather than circulation.
