Burkina Faso has issued currency under the West African CFA franc system since independence in 1960, but collector-oriented issues like this one are struck under licensing arrangements with private minting firms — typically European — with no meaningful connection to the national economy or the BCEAO's monetary operations. The 1500 francs denomination exists purely as a face-value vehicle for the bullion market.

The 2015 total solar eclipse visible from parts of West Africa on March 20th provided the commercial hook. That eclipse tracked primarily across the North Atlantic and the Faroe Islands, reaching only partial visibility over Burkina Faso itself.
