Andorra's co-princeship is one of the oldest surviving feudal arrangements in Europe, dividing sovereignty between the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state — a structure dating to the 1278 Paréage. Joan Martí i Alanis held the episcopal seat from 1971 to 2003, making him one of the longer-serving co-princes in modern memory. His portrait appearing on Andorran coinage was not ceremonial vanity; until 1982, Andorra issued no regular circulation coinage at all, and these early collector pieces were among the first sovereign issues the principality had produced in centuries.
