The Banca Popolare Udinese's 150 lire note belongs to the wave of privately-issued fiduciary notes — known in Italy as miniassegni — that flooded the country in the mid-1970s when a chronic shortage of small coins made everyday transactions genuinely difficult. Banks, businesses, and cooperatives all issued their own substitute scrip, and for a few years the practice was tolerated by the Banca d'Italia despite the obvious legal awkwardness.
The 150 lire denomination is among the more unusual face values in the series, reflecting the specific pricing pressures of the moment rather than any conventional monetary logic.
