Barbados launched its national flower gold series in the late 1970s as part of a broader post-independence effort to build a distinct numismatic identity — the island had only established its own currency in 1973, replacing the Eastern Caribbean dollar. The Poinciana issue followed the earlier Wild Plantain and Frangipani pieces in the sequence, all struck at the Franklin Mint under contract.
The .500 fineness is low for a commemorative gold coin of this period, a deliberate choice that kept metal costs down while maintaining a nominal gold content sufficient for legal tender classification.
