| Obverse description | Diademed and draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, after the portrait by Arnold Machin, centered in a mirror-like proof field. The circular legend COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date NOV. 3 flanking the left and 1978 flanking the right of the bust at mid-field. The word INDEPENDENCE curves along the lower periphery, commemorating the island's independence from Britain. |

Dominica gained independence from Britain on November 3, 1978, making this one of the shortest gaps between independence and commemorative gold issue in Caribbean monetary history — the coin was struck the same year the Associated State dissolved. The Imperial Amazon parrot had been the symbol of Dominica's conservation movement since the early 1970s, when populations had been decimated by hurricanes and hunting; the newly independent government had been lobbying internationally for its protection before independence was even formally achieved.
