Appenzell Innerrhoden remained one of the few Swiss cantons to maintain its own silver coinage well into the eighteenth century, a privilege fiercely defended by the Catholic half of the divided Appenzell after the confessional split of 1597 formally separated it from Protestant Ausserrhoden.
