Eferding's Lebensmittelausgabestelle — the municipal food distribution office — issued this note in 1920, when Austria's postwar economic collapse had stripped small copper and nickel coinage from everyday commerce almost entirely. These hyperlocal Heller notes were functional tokens, issued by the authority responsible for rationing rather than by a bank or finance office, which is uncommon even within the already chaotic world of Austrian Notgeld.
L. Haase is credited as engraver, a name that appears on a handful of Upper Austrian municipal issues from this period but remains otherwise poorly documented.
