Part of Perth Mint's long-running Australian Fauna series, this issue appeared during a period when the mint was aggressively expanding its fine gold fractional program to capture the collector bullion market — particularly in Asia, where small-denomination .9999 gold proofs had developed a strong secondary market. The great white shark had featured in Australian numismatics before, but the 2007 iteration used Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced to Australian coinage in 1999.
KM#975 is a low-mintage proof with no released circulation strike equivalent at this weight and denomination.
