Part of Perth Mint's long-running Australian Platinum Proof series, which launched in 1988 as one of the first government-issued platinum bullion and proof programs in the world. The echidna — one of only two surviving monotreme genera — was a deliberate choice for a coin aimed at international collectors, its biological oddity carrying the same premium-market appeal that drives the entire series.
The 1/10 oz denomination kept acquisition costs accessible during a period when platinum routinely traded above gold.
