Obverse description The obverse presents a large circular disc with a gold-plated finish, featuring a broad outer border decorated with a continuous Greek key (meander) pattern in red and gold. Within this border, twelve panels arranged in a ring each display a red-enamelled silhouette of one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. An inner ring bears the eight trigrams (bagua) symbols alternating around the circumference. At the centre, the coat of arms of the Republic of Ghana is depicted in full colour, flanked by the legend REPUBLIC OF GHANA arching above, and the inscription 5 oz Ag 999 · 15 CEDIS · 2026 arching below within a circular frame.

Reverse description The reverse is executed in fully three-dimensional sculptural form, depicting a stylised rat figure rendered in the round with a gold-plated antique finish. The rotund figure stands upright on its hind legs with forepaws raised to its chest, with large rounded ears prominent at the top. The rat rests upon a flat circular base engraved with a dense pattern of Chinese characters and auspicious symbols in red and gold, evoking traditional Chinese decorative script. The overall sculptural treatment is characteristic of contemporary Chinese Lunar series collector coinage, presenting the rat as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.

Additional information

Ghana's lunar series issues are produced under license arrangements common to many African sovereign mints — the designs and specifications are typically contracted to private minting houses in Europe or Asia, with the issuing authority lending its name and legal tender status. This piece, at over 500 grams, is squarely a collector's bullion object rather than anything that ever touched Ghanaian commerce.

The Year of the Rat opens the twelve-year zodiac cycle, recurring in 2026 after 2008 and 1996.
