Beschrijving keerzijde The Chinese sea goddess Mazu is portrayed seated in full frontal view upon a throne, wearing elaborate traditional imperial robes and an ornate headdress. Stylized ocean waves radiate symmetrically to either side of the enthroned figure, evoking her dominion over the sea. The Chinese characters '媽祖' appear to the right of the figure in the field. The legend 'GODDESS OF THE SEA' is inscribed along the upper border, with the denomination '15.000 Kip' displayed in a rectangular cartouche at the lower periphery.

Aanvullende informatie

Mazu is a Chinese sea goddess whose cult originated in Fujian province during the Song dynasty and spread across maritime Southeast Asia through centuries of Chinese emigration. Her inclusion on a Lao commemorative is commercially driven — these pieces were produced almost entirely for the export collector market, targeting diaspora communities and thematic collectors in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, where Mazu worship remains actively practiced. Laos has no meaningful coastal tradition connected to the deity.
