Tarentum — modern Taranto — was the only Spartan colonial foundation in Magna Graecia, established around 706 BC by a group of Partheniai, a class of Spartans whose precise legal status remains debated by scholars. The city's coinage in this fractional range dates to a period when Tarentum was consolidating regional power following the Greek victory over the Iapygians at the Battle of... though caution is warranted here: the connection between specific military events and fractional issues this small remains speculative in the literature.
At 0.14 g, these pieces were struck for genuine small transactions, not prestige. Vlasto 1123 places this among the earliest organised fractional output from the mint.
