Heraclea Sintica was a Macedonian city established by Cassander around 300 BC near the Strymon River, and the magistrate formula ΕΠΙ ϹΤΡΥΜΟΝΙ — "on the Strymon" — appearing on this issue is geographically descriptive rather than a personal name, an unusual practice that distinguishes this series from most civic bronze of the region. The city passed through Antigonid, then Roman hands after the defeat of Perseus at Pydna in 168 BC, and this coinage likely dates to the period of reorganization under the Roman provincial structure.
