Joseph Bech served as Luxembourg's Foreign Minister for over two decades and was one of the six signatories of the Treaty of Paris in 1951, which established the European Coal and Steel Community — the direct institutional ancestor of the European Union. This coin is part of a commemorative series honoring architects of European integration, each issue assigned a sequential number within the set. Bech's inclusion reflects his role in shepherding the Benelux customs union and pushing for supranational economic structures at a moment when postwar consensus was still fragile enough to collapse.
