The effigy is the work of engraver A. Michaux, whose signature appears in the lower field. The circumferential legend reads CAROL I REGE AL ROMANIEI flanked by the regnal dates 1866 and 1906, commemorating the monarch's forty-year reign. A fine dentilated border frames the entire design.
