Produced for the 1906 Jubilee Exhibition in Bucharest, which marked forty years of Carol I's reign, this pattern was part of a broader series of trial and fantasy denominations struck in various metals to commemorate the occasion. The 12½ lei face value had no practical monetary application — Romania's circulating coinage of the period ran to round denominations — making this a prestige piece from the outset rather than a failed circulation proposal.
White metal patterns from this series vary considerably in surface quality and die sharpness, as they were struck in small numbers under exhibition rather than production conditions.
