Obverse description Central field bearing the elaborate calligraphic tughra of Sultan Mehmed V, rendered in fine Arabic script and surrounded by an ornate foliate border of interlaced arabesque scrollwork that fills the entire coin field. The tughra, a monogram of the sultan's name and titles, is the principal device and is executed with characteristic Ottoman calligraphic precision. The decorative border consists of deeply relief-struck acanthus-style foliage radiating from the four quadrants, imparting an exceptionally rich and artistic appearance to the small gold flan.
