Struck atop the denomination numeral is the Azorean 'big crown' countermark — a raised imperial crown punch applied in 1871 to validate the coin for circulation in the Azores at the revalued rate of 1200 Réis. The coin is struck on a beaded-bordered planchet consistent with Brazilian imperial coinage of the mid-nineteenth century. |
