Beschrijving voorzijde Equestrian figure of King Charles I of Anjou shown in profile to the right, mounted on a walking horse, wearing a crown and holding a raised sword in his right hand. The king is depicted in full regalia in the medieval feudal tradition. The central device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the partial Latin legend K DEI GRACIA distributed around the periphery. The hammered flan exhibits the characteristic irregular planchet shape typical of 13th-century Sicilian gold coinage.
Schrift voorzijde Latin

Beschrijving keerzijde A tall patriarchal cross with two crossbars occupies the central field, dividing the area into four quadrants. The Greek Christogram IC XC (Jesus Christ) is inscribed in the upper two quadrants flanking the upper arm of the cross, while the Greek acclamation NI KA (conquers) appears in the lower two quadrants, forming the devotional formula IC XC NI KA (Jesus Christ conquers). The legend R SICILIE (Rex Siciliae) runs around the periphery within a beaded circle. The design continues the Byzantine-influenced iconographic tradition inherited from the Norman and Hohenstaufen predecessors of the Angevin rulers of Sicily.
