Coesfeld's copper Pfennig issues of this period were emergency municipal coinages, struck as the Thirty Years' War disrupted normal silver supply across Westphalia. The city held the right to issue small copper pieces under imperial municipal privilege, though such rights were frequently contested and periodically suspended by regional authorities throughout the conflict.
The Weingärtner Westfalens reference places this among a well-documented but numerically small series of Coesfeld municipal types, most of which circulated heavily in local markets and survived poorly.
