The 12 mark denomination was a distinctly Danish accounting unit, equal to one krone courant, and this small gold issue belongs to Christian VII's reign — a period when the king's severe mental illness had rendered him functionally incapable of governing. Real power rested with his physician Johann Friedrich Struensee through 1772, and thereafter with the Council of State and later the king's son's regency apparatus. The coins bore his name and portrait throughout regardless.
