The Kipper- und Wipperzeit of 1619–1623 was one of the most destructive monetary crises in German history, driven by municipal and princely mints deliberately debasing coinage to extract seigniorage profit while passing the bad metal to neighbors. Magdeburg was among the many city mints that participated, striking rapid, low-silver issues to meet demand during the early chaos of the Thirty Years' War.
The 12 Kreuzer denomination was a creature almost entirely of the Kipper period — it had no meaningful pre-war tradition and largely vanished once imperial diet decrees forced a return to proper coin standards after 1623.
