| Beschrijving keerzijde | A full-length frontal figure of Christ is depicted standing, rendered in a hieratic Byzantine-influenced style, with arms slightly extended and holding a book of the Gospels in the left hand. The figure is set within the coin field with a nimbus or halo surrounding the head. The encircling legend, reading DEFENS · NOSTER, proclaims Christ as 'Our Defender,' a devotional invocation consistent with Venetian religious numismatic tradition. The overall composition is characteristic of the small-denomination billon issues struck under the later doges of the Serenissima. |

Francesco Cornaro's dogeship lasted barely two years, from 1656 to 1656 — he died in office just months after election. This issue falls squarely within the War of Candia, Venice's grinding 25-year struggle against the Ottomans for control of Crete, a conflict that was quietly bankrupting the Republic and forcing repeated debasements of its billon coinage. The 12 bagattini denomination was deep petty change by this point, its silver content already marginal.
