Francesco Cornaro's dogeship lasted barely two years, from 1656 to 1656 — he died in office just months after election. This issue falls squarely within the War of Candia, Venice's grinding 25-year struggle against the Ottomans for control of Crete, a conflict that was quietly bankrupting the Republic and forcing repeated debasements of its billon coinage.
