Euagoras I ruled Salamis during one of the most politically precarious periods in Cypriot history, navigating alliances with Athens and Persia simultaneously — often playing both against each other. He championed the introduction of the Greek alphabet to Cyprus, displacing the island's ancient syllabic script, a reform that reshaped Cypriot administrative and cultural life. This tiny gold fraction likely served elite or mercantile exchange during a reign that ended with his assassination by a eunuch in 374 BC, the result of a private dispute rather than political conspiracy, according to Diodorus Siculus.
