Monnaie de Paris has issued commemorative pieces tied to Belgian comic characters before, but this 2008 Spirou issue is a French mint product — an unusual jurisdictional wrinkle, given that Spirou himself debuted in a Belgian weekly in 1938 and remains most closely associated with Marcinelle and the Dupuis publishing house.
